Death Note - Prof. Dr. Diógenes Cortez

It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Prof. Dr. Diógenes Cortez, Senior Researcher of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences of UEM.

DIÓGENES APARÍCIO GARCIA CORTEZ (☆1952, †2017), completed the course of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, SP, in 1974. He began activities at the State University of Maringá (UEM) in 1980 as Professor of Pharmacotechnics . Between 1984 and 1985 he was the initiator of the discipline of Pharmacognosy in the Department of Pharmacy-Biochemistry, considering that in this initial period of the Course of Pharmacy of the UEM, the discipline was offered by the Department of Biology.


Between 1986-88, he completed his master's degree at the Federal University of São Carlos, together with the Post-Graduate Program in Chemistry under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Paulo Cesar Vieira, and between 1989-1993 under the guidance of Prof. Dr. João Batista Fernandes developed his doctorate in the same Institution. In the years of 1996-97 he remained in the Laboratory of Prof. Kurt Hostettmann at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, in postdoctoral training. In the year of 2001 Diógenes was the first Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences of UEM, remaining for 3 years in front of this one. He directed several students in Scientific Initiation, Course Completion, as well as 40 Masters and 17 Doctors, both in Pharmaceutical Sciences and in Chemistry.


He has published or is still in the process of publishing about 200 scientific articles, 5 patent applications, 4 books and 4 book chapters, and was Research Productivity at CNPq for years. He participated actively in the construction of the Pharmacy Course and the creation of the Post-Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences throughout his career in UEM, where he retired in late 2011. Since then he has been linked to the Post-Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the UEM and in the Graduate Program Health Promotion Master, linked to the Center of Higher Education of Maringá, CESUMAR.

Diogenes leaves a legacy of creation, optimism and hope to his pupils, friends and colleagues for his many accomplishments.
