Title: Quality assessment, phytochemical and antioxidant capacity of extracts from the bark of Stryphnodendron obovatum Benth. (Leguminosae)
Abstract: Stryphnodendron obovatum Benth. (Leguminosae), popularly known as “barbatimão”, a species native to the Brazilian cerrado (savannah), has been used for a long time for the treatment of various illnesses, mainly as a cicatrizant and antiseptic. Its bark is rich in tannins. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality control, isolate polyphenolic substances from the raw extract, and evaluate the antioxidant capacity of extracts of the bark of S. obovatum Benth. The quality control of the raw plant material was carried out following pharmacopeic parameters. It was possible to trace a profile of the chemical constituents of the plant drug, in order to establish a standard of reproducibility compatible with the literature. From the ethyl-acetate fraction, 24 subfractions were obtained by chromatography on a Sephadex® LH-20 column. Seven substances were isolated and identified: gallic acid, gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4’-O-methyl-gallocatechin, epigallocatechin-(4β→8)-epigallocatechin, and robinetinidol-(4α→8)-gallocatechin, by mass spectrometry, RMN 1H, RMN 13C, COSY 1H/1H, HMBC and HMQC. The study of the antioxidant capacity for the method of DPPH· it evidenced that the gross extract and the fraction acetate of etila of S. obovatum possesses high antioxidant capacity when compared with the vitamin C. The antioxidant capacity evaluated by the method of the complex phosphomolibdenum evidenced that so much the fraction ethyl-acetate as the aqueous fraction possesses capacity of formation of the complex phosphomolibdenum when compared with the vitamin C. In this way, S. obovatum Benth. was showed to probably have an antioxidant, due high capacity to the presence of tannins, mainly of the condensed type, as demonstrated in the phytochemical analysis.
